Art therapy uses art as its mode of communication. Through art-making, people can express and explore feelings that are at times confusing and difficult to communicate verbally.
Children, adults, and even elders may benefit from art therapy. It is suitable for a wide range of issues, disabilities and diagnoses. These include emotional or mental health problems, learning or physical disabilities, life- limiting conditions and physical illness.
Art therapy may be provided in a group or individual sessions. It is not a recreational activity or an art lesson, although the sessions can be enjoyable.
No previous experience or expertise in art is necessary.
It can sometimes be hard to talk directly about difficult feelings, so communicating through art may be easier, or more appropriate.
Using art materials to make images which can be thought about with a qualified and registered art therapist, may help relieve difficult or painful feelings and can help increase general well-being.
Sometimes, words can’t be used or found to describe thoughts and feelings, but the processes involved in art-making, and the images themselves can help to do so.
Art therapists are employed in many different settings in the statutory and independent sectors, e.g. education, hospitals, social services, charities, child and adolescent services, and adult mental health, in day or residential provision. Some art therapists also work in private practice.
Art therapy practitioners work with a wide range of patients who are affected by a variety of problems, including mental health problems, behavioural difficulties, learning disabilities and life-limiting conditions.
The therapy aims to channel patients’ energies into visual art, in order to help them to understand, express and address their inner conflicts.
Art therapists play an active part in the sessions, guiding patients through the creative process and encouraging them to engage with their feelings and explore the thought processes behind them.
My name is Wendy Speed and I am the Art therapist at Imprint Art Therapy.
